Understanding the Role of All Tai Ahom Students’ Union: Genesis and Community Development

  • Students’ movement have been recognizing as a worldwide phenomenon and have a great impact on policy making, educational as well as political discourse in many countries, especially in the developing nations. Students’ organizations have undertaken various courses of action through different kinds of student movements. The student activism in the Northeast has been observing for the cause of the protection of their distinct ethno-cultural identities. The Tai Ahoms of Assam have faced a lot of problems in different aspects. In order to remove their socio-economic backwardness, they gradually began to organize themselves, which culminated in the formation of several Ahom organizations for the cause of protecting their constitutional safeguards and ethnic lingo-cultural identities. The All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) has been very much concerned with various problems of the Tai Ahom community. The ATASU has raised host of demands before the government which are political, non-political, academic and non-academic in nature for the cause of all round development of their community. The present study will examine the genesis of the ATASU and its role in community development in Assam.
